What you get second-hand
- A phone that's four to five years old: expect battery health between 78% and 88% on most units, which still gets most people through a day thanks to the big battery.
- The 120Hz ProMotion screen and 3x optical zoom that the regular iPhone 13 and 14 don't have.
- Still on the current iOS, with a few more years of updates likely.
- Lightning, not USB-C, and a stainless steel frame that shows scratches more than aluminium.
What moves the price
- Battery health: each 5% below 90% takes roughly Rs 2,000–3,000 off.
- Storage: 256GB adds about Rs 4,000–7,000 over 128GB.
- Replaced screen or battery (shown as 'Unknown Part'): Rs 5,000–12,000 less.
- Box, bill or remaining AppleCare add trust more than value, often Rs 2,000–3,000.
Before you pay for a used iPhone
- 1Zoom the camera to 3x and check the telephoto lens actually switches over; a damaged telephoto falls back to digital zoom.
- 2Check the stainless steel band and the camera glass for cracks; repairs on this model are expensive.
- 3Dial *#06# and check the IMEI is registered in NTA's MDMS system (mdms.nta.gov.np). An unregistered phone can be blocked from Nepali networks.
- 4Settings → General → About → Parts and Service History should show only Genuine Apple Parts. 'Unknown Part' on the battery, display or camera means a cheap replacement.
- 5Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Under 80% means a battery change soon (Rs 6,000–12,000 for a good one); price that in.
- 6Make sure the seller signs out of iCloud and erases the phone in front of you, then set it up with your own Apple ID. Never buy a phone with Activation Lock on.
- 7Test Face ID, all cameras (including zoom), the speakers, the microphone (record a voice memo) and charging.
- 8If True Tone is missing from Control Center's brightness controls, the screen has been replaced.
- 9Meet in daylight at a busy place, check everything before handing over money, and ask for the box and bill if they exist.
On HaatBazar, reserve the item to hold it for 48 hours and chat with the seller, then meet and check everything before paying the rest.
