What you get second-hand
- Flexible storage on convertible models, handy for big families or shops.
- Good energy efficiency on Digital Inverter models.
- A large service network; parts are easy to get.
What moves the price
- Convertible models are worth Rs 3,000–5,000 more than standard double doors.
- Age and cooling performance matter more than looks.
- Dents on the door and a cracked vegetable crisper are cheap fixes; a weak compressor isn't.
Before you pay for a used fridge
- 1If it's a convertible model, switch modes and check each one cools to the right temperature.
- 2See it running: the freezer should frost and the fridge should feel cold within 30–60 minutes of switching on.
- 3Listen to the compressor. A steady hum is fine; loud knocking, clicking on and off every few minutes or a hot, constantly running compressor is not.
- 4Close the door on a sheet of paper: if it slides out easily, the door seal (gasket) needs replacing.
- 5Look under and behind for rust, oily spots on the pipes (a sign of a gas leak) and a damaged power cord.
- 6Ask its age, whether it's an inverter model and whether it has needed a gas refill. A refill or compressor repair is a reason to pay less.
- 7Move it upright, and let it stand 3–4 hours at home before switching it on so the oil settles back into the compressor.
- 8Use a voltage stabilizer unless the model is rated stabilizer-free.
