What you get second-hand
- A relaxed, torquey cruiser that's comfortable on long trips and highways.
- The 2021+ J-series engine is much smoother and more reliable than the old UCE.
- Heavy at about 195 kg; less suited to tight city traffic.
What moves the price
- J-series (2021+) vs older UCE: the newer engine is worth a lot more.
- Dual-channel ABS and premium colours (Chrome, Signals) add value.
- Genuine accessories (crash guard, carrier) add a little; heavy modifications subtract.
Before you pay for a used bike
- 1On older UCE bikes, check for oil leaks around the engine and listen for tappet noise.
- 2Check the bluebook: the chassis and engine numbers on the bike must match it, and the owner's name should match the seller's citizenship.
- 3Make sure the yearly tax and bluebook renewal are paid up to date, and that third-party insurance is valid. Unpaid tax and fines pass to you.
- 4Ask whether the bike was bought on a loan; if the bluebook shows a bank, it must be cleared before the name transfer.
- 5Do the name transfer together at the Yatayat (Transport Management) office. Don't pay in full on a promise to do it later.
- 6Start it cold: listen for knocking or ticking, look for blue or white smoke, and check the oil for a milky colour.
- 7Ride it: clutch, gears, brakes (and ABS if fitted), and any wobble from the forks or wheels. Look for frame welds, bent levers and oil on the fork seals.
- 8Compare the odometer with the tyre, chain-and-sprocket and brake wear. A low reading on a worn bike is a red flag.
